Veterinary Nutrition Referral Requirements & Clinical Collaboration

Our Commitment to Veterinary Oversight and Regulatory Compliance

Our nutrition consultation services are designed to support veterinarians, patients, and clients through individualized, evidence-informed nutrition planning while maintaining full compliance with applicable regulatory and professional standards. To achieve this, a completed Veterinary Nutrition Referral Form is required for all patients referred for nutritional consultation, particularly when medical conditions or therapeutic diet planning are involved.

This requirement is essential to ensure patient safety, legal compliance, and continuity of care.

Why Veterinary Approval Is Required
FDA Compliance: CPG Sec. 690.150

The FDA Compliance Policy Guide (CPG) Sec. 690.150 clarifies that animal diets intended to diagnose, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease are considered therapeutic in nature and must be recommended or approved by a licensed veterinarian. This includes nutrition plans addressing conditions such as (but not limited to) renal disease, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine disease, dermatologic conditions, cardiac disease, obesity, and other medical concerns.

Requiring veterinary authorization ensures that:

  • Nutrition recommendations are clinically appropriate for the patient’s diagnosed or suspected conditions

  • Therapeutic diet planning occurs within the veterinarian–client–patient relationship (VCPR)

  • All services remain compliant with federal regulatory guidance

  • Both the referring veterinarian and our team are protected from unintended regulatory or professional risk

Our referral process is not a barrier to care it is a safeguard that allows nutrition to be used responsibly and ethically as part of a comprehensive medical plan.

Why We Require a Veterinary Nutrition Referral Form

The Veterinary Nutrition Referral Form allows us to:

  • Confirm medical diagnoses, current treatments, and contraindications

  • Understand the referring veterinarian’s clinical goals and preferences

  • Ensure nutrition recommendations align with the existing treatment plan

  • Identify when ongoing veterinary oversight is required for therapeutic cases

  • Maintain accurate documentation for compliance and quality assurance

This collaborative approach supports safer, more effective nutrition strategies and ensures that dietary interventions complement not replace medical management.

A Collaborative, Hands-On Approach to Veterinary Nutrition

We intentionally operate differently from automated or AI-generated diet platforms. While algorithm-based tools may produce generalized recommendations, they lack the ability to:

  • Account for complex or concurrent disease processes

  • Integrate nuanced clinical context

  • Adjust recommendations based on real-time patient response

  • Collaborate directly with the attending veterinarian

Our model emphasizes:

  • Individualized patient assessments

  • Direct collaboration with referring veterinarians

  • Ongoing communication when adjustments are needed

  • Client education delivered with clinical oversight

  • Evidence-informed, patient-specific nutrition planning

This hands-on approach allows us to support clients more meaningfully while respecting the veterinarian’s role as the primary medical authority.

Supporting Clients While Respecting the Veterinary Role

We are committed to working closely with clients while remaining firmly within the scope of veterinary-approved nutrition care. Our services are designed to enhance compliance, understanding, and outcomes without undermining the veterinarian client relationship.

For non-therapeutic cases, we focus on:

  • General wellness nutrition

  • Life-stage support

  • Client education and adherence

For therapeutic cases, we require:

  • Veterinary approval prior to initiating diet planning

  • Ongoing collaboration as clinical conditions evolve

Our Shared Goal

Our goal is to support veterinarians by:

  • Enhancing patient outcomes through nutrition

  • Reducing client confusion caused by unregulated online advice

  • Providing compliant, collaborative nutrition services

  • Upholding professional and regulatory standards

We value partnership, transparency, and communication and appreciate your collaboration in completing the Veterinary Nutrition Referral Form. Together, we can provide nutrition care that is safe, compliant, personalized, and clinically meaningful.
