Consultation Requirements

Healthy Pets & Preventative Nutrition Consultations

For healthy pets seeking nutritional guidance for wellness, life-stage support, or home-prepared diet planning, a formal veterinary diagnosis is not required. These consultations focus on preventative nutrition and overall health support using evidence-based principles.

While veterinary medical records are not mandatory for healthy-pet consultations, we strongly recommend that all pets maintain an active relationship with a licensed veterinarian. Routine wellness exams, laboratory testing, and diagnostic monitoring such as bloodwork are important to ensure that any formulated diet is meeting the patient’s nutritional needs and supporting long-term health. Ongoing veterinary oversight allows for objective assessment and appropriate adjustments over time.

Medically Managed Conditions & Therapeutic Nutrition Consultations

For pets with diagnosed or suspected medical conditions, complete and current veterinary medical records are required prior to scheduling a consultation. Therapeutic diet formulation must be informed by an established veterinary diagnosis, diagnostic findings, laboratory results, prescribed medications, and the attending veterinarian’s treatment plan.

In accordance with professional standards and scope of practice, we do not diagnose medical conditions and will not formulate diets for medically managed conditions without veterinary medical records. All nutritional recommendations are designed to complement not replace veterinary care and require continued follow-up with a general practice and/or specialty veterinarian to ensure patient safety, efficacy, and appropriate monitoring.

Consultations for medically managed conditions require a completed veterinary form prior to scheduling. Per FDA CPG Sec. 690.150, veterinary approval is required for any and all health conditions. Please click the button at the right to have your veterinarian complete the form so we may proceed with scheduling.

Supporting Commercial Diets

At Erik Corona Pet Care, we understand that not all pet parents are able to prepare home-cooked or fully natural diets for their pets due to lifestyle, convenience, or time constraints. That’s why we are happy to provide guidance for commercially available diets, including natural, high-quality options as well as dry kibble and canned foods.

Our goal is to ensure that every pet receives a nutritionally balanced diet that fits both their health needs and your lifestyle. We can help you choose the best commercial diet or optimize an existing diet to meet your pet’s nutritional requirements. When a veterinary-prescribed therapeutic diet is indicated, we collaborate closely with your veterinarian to integrate it safely into your pet’s nutrition plan, ensuring optimal outcomes while supporting practicality for daily life.

Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine

To provide safe, individualized, and responsible support through Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine (VCHM), an in-person evaluation is required for all patients. This assessment may be completed either at our location or through a scheduled house call. Remote or virtual consultations are not offered for this service.

Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine relies on detailed, hands-on observation that cannot be accurately assessed through photographs, videos, or written history alone. An in-person visit allows for direct evaluation of the patient’s physical condition, movement, posture, coat and skin quality, body condition, temperature sensitivity, behavior, and overall vitality. These observations are essential for forming appropriate herbal considerations and ensuring recommendations are tailored to the individual animal.

In addition, an in-person visit supports safe and ethical practice by allowing for verification of medical history, review of veterinary records when applicable, and assessment of potential contraindications or interactions with current medications or therapies. Herbal support must be carefully integrated with conventional veterinary care, and a physical examination helps ensure recommendations are appropriate for the patient’s current health status.

Requiring an in-person visit also aligns with professional and regulatory standards for integrative veterinary support. Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine is intended to complement not replace veterinary diagnosis and treatment, and hands-on assessment is a critical component of responsible, evidence-informed practice.

By conducting an in-person evaluation, we are able to provide thoughtful, individualized, and safe herbal support that respects both traditional principles and modern veterinary medicine, while prioritizing the comfort, well-being, and long-term health of each patient.

Pet Herbology (Western Herbal Formulas)

At Erik Corona Pet Care, our Pet Herbology services provide evidence-informed herbal support for companion animals, integrating the natural therapeutic potential of plants with veterinary-guided care. We offer both commercially available herbal brands and customized formulations tailored to the specific needs of your pet, ensuring that each recommendation is safe, effective, and aligned with their overall health plan.

Western herbal formulas are designed to address a wide range of concerns, from everyday wellness needs to supportive care for acute or chronic conditions. For example, simple issues like digestive upset, diarrhea, or mild inflammation can be managed with gentle, plant-based remedies that target the specific organ system while minimizing side effects. We also use herbs to support immune function, energy levels, cardiovascular health, skin and coat quality, and general vitality.

Custom formulations are created based on your pet’s age, size, health status, lifestyle, and concurrent veterinary care. Each formula considers interactions with medications, pre-existing conditions, and species-specific metabolism to ensure safety and effectiveness. Whether it’s a multivitamin-style formula for overall wellness, targeted gastrointestinal support, or herbs to promote calm and stress reduction, our approach integrates scientific understanding of active plant compounds with practical, individualized care.

All Pet Herbology services are provided as a complement to veterinary-directed care. We do not diagnose medical conditions, but instead focus on supportive, evidence-informed herbal therapy to enhance quality of life, aid recovery, and optimize long-term health outcomes. Our goal is to provide pets and their caregivers with natural, safe, and effective options to support both daily wellness and medically guided nutritional or therapeutic plans.

Scheduling VCHM or Herbology Consult

Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine (VCHM) requires an in-person consultation with the animal present to allow for hands-on evaluation and individualized assessment. This ensures safe, accurate, and effective recommendations based on the patient’s physical condition, behavior, and overall vitality.

For general Western herbal support, individualized recommendations may be provided via telehealth consultation, allowing for guidance on wellness, supplementation, or supportive care when an in-person evaluation is not required. All herbal guidance is designed to complement veterinary-directed care and prioritize the safety and well-being of the patient.
